Features: Lima is the capital and largest city of Peru, the largest industrial center, and a major transportation hub. It has a population of 42,000. The main industries include food, textiles, leather processing, clothing, tires, synthetic fibers, metal processing, and oil refining. The international airport is located in Callao. The city is divided into two parts: the old city and the new city. The old city has a grid-like street layout with narrow streets and low-rise buildings. The new city is mainly located in the west and south. Lima is located on the banks of the Rímac River. It is surrounded by deserts and enjoys sunshine all year round. Lima is known as the "Rainless City of the World," with only 31 millimeters of rainfall, mostly falling as fog or mist. There are no thunderstorms, fierce winds, or heavy rains throughout the year, and freezing or snowfall are unheard of. It is likely that the people of Lima have never seen rain gear. Peru is the home of the ancient Inca Empire, where indigenous people live. Lima was founded in 1535 and was a long-standing political, economic, cultural, and transportation center of Spanish colonial rule in South America. It became the capital of Peru in 1821. Its long history has left behind numerous historical landmarks. Museums, churches, and squares are scattered throughout the city. Once the richest city in South America, its streets were said to be paved with gold and silver. The grandeur of the preserved ancient buildings and their exquisite designs reveal the wealth and prosperity of the past. The Government Palace was built in 1938. The main church on Plaza de Armas was constructed in 1555 and is a religious museum that retains a strong Spanish architectural style. The Church of Mercy and the Convent of Nuns are the earliest churches built in Lima and are typical of Lima architecture. The Torretagle Palace is the best-preserved colonial-era building, known for its beauty and elegance. Plaza de La Revolución is surrounded by many museums, including the Republic Museum, the Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology, and the National Art Museum, which are all quite famous. The Gold Museum in the suburbs of Lima displays over 8,000 precious artifacts from the 5th to the 5th century BC, including many exquisite golden crowns, jewelry, armor, shields, and religious vessels made of gold.
