This book records Goethe's late thoughts and activities on literature, aesthetics, philosophy, natural sciences, politics, religion, and general culture. The Conversations is an important primary source for studying Goethe, especially in the field of literature. It documents Goethe's mature thoughts and practical experiences in his later years. The period of The Conversations coincides with the completion of Goethe's greatest play, Faust, Part II. Goethe himself discussed his painstaking efforts on this play on multiple occasions, offering insightful perspectives for understanding the play itself and broader issues of literary creation.
