Features: Basic English Course (Volumes 1 and 2) is a professional textbook designed for the learning characteristics of first- and second-year students in English majors at higher education institutions, in accordance with the Teaching Syllabus for English Majors in Higher Education issued by the Ministry of Education in April 2000. The main features of this textbook include:
1. It breaks the limitations of traditional "cramming" teaching methods in English reading courses and emphasizes the cultivation of students' independent learning and research abilities. The student workbook does not include a vocabulary list, as years of teaching experience have shown that students can only deepen their understanding of vocabulary and content by actively consulting dictionaries. To help students identify and think about problems while studying the texts, we divide each Text A into left and right columns. The right column serves as key points for self-study and classroom discussions, as well as providing space for students to take notes. This layout fully reflects the student-centered teaching philosophy, enabling students to develop independent reading, comprehension, learning, and thinking skills. In the accompanying teacher's manual, we provide detailed teaching guidance to reduce the burden on teachers during preparation and expand classroom content.
2. The textbook features a wide range of fresh and diverse materials. Text A in the lessons is primarily selected from renowned works, while Text B consists of articles related to the theme of Text A but with different styles, perspectives, or a modern touch. This allows students to study classic English masterpieces, engage with contemporary themes, explore relevant viewpoints and knowledge, and develop the ability to think and analyze independently through comparisons of different styles and perspectives.
3. The post-lesson exercises in this textbook are divided into in-class and out-of-class activities, which is another innovation. English learning is a comprehensive process of improving fundamental skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. Basic English is one of the essential foundational courses for English majors. In addition to practicing new language points related to the lessons, students need to review and consolidate their existing language foundation while broadening their knowledge. Both students and teachers can flexibly adjust the amount of practice based on actual language learning needs. During the trial period, feedback from instructors and students was incorporated, and further modifications and refinements were made to the layout design. We hope to offer students and teachers a textbook with a completely new style.
