Features: Basic English Course (Volumes 1 and 2) is a professional textbook developed in accordance with the Teaching Syllabus for English Majors in Higher Education issued by the Ministry of Education in April 2000, specifically tailored to the learning characteristics of first- and second-year English majors in higher education. The main features of this textbook include:
1. It breaks away from the drawbacks and limitations of traditional "cramming-style" English reading instruction, emphasizing the cultivation of students' independent learning and research abilities. Unlike most textbooks, this coursebook does not include a vocabulary list at the end of each lesson, as years of teaching experience have shown that students only deepen their understanding of words and content by actively consulting dictionaries. To help students identify, solve, and reflect on problems while studying the texts, we divide each Text A into left and right columns. The right column serves as key points for self-study and classroom discussion, as well as a space for students to take notes. This layout fully reflects the student-centered teaching philosophy, enabling students to develop independent reading, comprehension, learning, and thinking skills. Meanwhile, the accompanying teacher's manual provides detailed instructional guidance to reduce teachers' preparation workload and enrich classroom content.
2. The textbook features a wide and fresh selection of materials. Text A is primarily composed of renowned literary works, while Text B consists of contemporary articles related to Text A's theme, with varying styles or perspectives. This approach allows students to study classic English masterpieces while staying connected to modern trends; they can explore relevant viewpoints and knowledge while developing the ability to think and analyze independently through comparisons of different styles and perspectives.
3. The post-lesson exercises in this textbook are divided into in-class and out-of-class sections, which is an innovative feature. English learning is a comprehensive process of improving fundamental skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. Basic English is one of the essential foundational courses for English majors. In addition to practicing new language points related to the texts, students need to review and reinforce their existing language foundation while broadening their knowledge. Therefore, we have designed Text-based Exercises and After-class Assignments. Text-based Exercises focus on language practice related to the texts, covering five core skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. After-class Assignments include literary appreciation, grammar consolidation, and skill training. Students and teachers can flexibly adjust the amount of exercises based on their actual language learning needs.
