Features: Basic English Course (Volumes 1 and 2) is a professional textbook designed for the learning characteristics of first- and second-year students of English majors in higher education, in accordance with the Teaching Syllabus for English Majors in Higher Education promulgated by the Ministry of Education in April 2000. The main features of this textbook are as follows:
1. It breaks the traditional "cramming" teaching methods of English reading courses, emphasizing the cultivation of students' independent learning and research abilities in its arrangement. The study guide of this textbook does not include a vocabulary list, as years of teaching experience have shown that students can only deepen their understanding of vocabulary and content by actively consulting dictionaries. To help students identify, solve, and think about problems while studying the text, we divide each Text A into left and right columns. The right column serves as key points for self-study and classroom discussion, as well as providing space for students to take notes. This layout fully reflects the student-centered teaching philosophy, enabling students to develop independent reading, comprehension, learning, and thinking skills. In the accompanying teacher's manual, we provide detailed teaching guidance to reduce the burden on teachers during preparation and expand classroom information.
2. The textbook features a wide and fresh selection of materials. Text A is primarily selected from renowned works, while Text B consists of contemporary articles related to Text A's theme, with different styles or perspectives. This allows students to study classic English masterpieces, engage with up-to-date themes, learn relevant viewpoints and knowledge, and develop the ability to think and analyze independently through comparisons of different styles and perspectives.
3. The after-class exercises of this textbook are divided into in-class and out-of-class sections, which is also an innovative aspect of the book. English learning is a comprehensive improvement of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation skills. Basic English is one of the foundational courses for English majors, where students not only practice new language points related to the text but also review and consolidate existing language foundations while expanding their knowledge. Therefore, we have designed Text-based Exercises and After-class Assignments. Text-based Exercises primarily focus on language practice related to the text, covering training in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. After-class Assignments mainly include excellent writing appreciation, grammar consolidation exercises, and skill training. Students and teachers can flexibly arrange the amount of exercises based on actual language learning needs.
