Features: Shen Congwen (1902-1988), known as one of the most outstanding novelists in the history of modern Chinese literature, taught at Southwest Associated University and Peking University. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he worked at the Chinese History Museum and the Institute of History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. In addition to literary works such as Border Town and The Long River, he also left behind academic works like Research on Ancient Chinese Clothing. The content of this book includes Shen Congwen's critiques of modern Chinese writers and their works, primarily divided into two parts: fiction and poetry. He systematically evaluated the literary creations of the first two decades of modern literature, and some of his articles gained attention upon publication for their fair judgments and sincere perspectives. The other part consists of Shen Congwen's reflections on literary creation, all deeply rooted in his personal experiences, heartfelt, and incisive yet not hollow. Although theoretical in nature, his writing is elegant and thought-provoking, showcasing the talent of a literary master and his dedication to literature. Some chapters included in this book were recently compiled and published, and are not often found in his previous collections. The articles selected for this book mainly come from Shen Congwen's Glimmering Collection (first published by Dada Publishing House in 1931), Letters from a Discarded Mailbox (first published by Cultural Life Publishing House in 1937), Yunnan Notes (Chongqing National Book Company), and Shen Congwen Complete Works (first published by Beiyue Literature and Art Publishing House in 2002). The selection of articles has been reviewed by Mr. Shen Longzhu. To respect the original works, with the exception of some punctuation marks and obvious printing errors, the book retains some of the original usage and wording.
