Features: Wang Ji is one of Wang Yangming's most important disciples. His significance lies not only in the spread of Yangming's teachings, as described by Huang Zixi, which, through the influence of Taizhou and Longxi, became a dominant trend in the late Ming Dynasty, replacing Zhu Xi's scholarship as a new intellectual movement, but also in being the longest-lived and most controversial among Yangming's direct disciples. He spent his life teaching and debating, allowing us to observe the rise and division of Wang Yangming's thought from the Zhengde to the early Wanli era. More importantly, as he pioneered early enlightenment thought in China, he holds a significant place in the history of Chinese philosophy. This book, through abundant materials, provides a detailed account of his life, supplements the shortcomings of existing brief chronologies of Wang Ji, and offers a comprehensive discussion of his philosophical propositions, starting from the Tianquan Zhengdao. It highlights the dual nature of his philosophical system—high and low, as well as authority and practicality—and analyzes the new propositions he proposed, explaining the essential characteristics and historical impact of his philosophical thought. In the end, the book dedicates a special chapter to narrating the spread of Wang Ji's thought to Japan and the research conducted by Japanese scholars on him.
