Features: This book is written based on the accumulation of long-term teaching reforms in the Department of Electronic Engineering at Peking University. From the perspective of modern technology, light waves have become a practical band in electronics, and optoelectronic technologies such as amplification, oscillation, mixing, modulation, and demodulation have become increasingly mature. In this sense, optics should embody the macroscopic wave theory in fundamental courses. "Optics" should be a continuation of "Electromagnetism" and also the foundation of "Wave Theory." However, compared to sound waves and electromagnetic waves radiated by artificial devices, light waves have their own distinct characteristics in polarization and coherence. Based on these understandings, this book starts with electromagnetic waves (vector waves) to discuss interference and diffraction phenomena, explains the relationship between the near-field and far-field of wave sources, and involves basic waveguide components and several types of antennas and antenna arrays in examples and exercises, aiming to guide readers to further understand the commonalities of waves in various bands. To adapt to the development of "Applied Optics," this book provides an introductory overview of optoelectronics. For this purpose, it qualitatively introduces optical nonlinear effects, explains the generation of lasers using a macroscopic feedback principle, and describes the modes of light waves in optical fibers through multi-beam interference within thin films. To align geometric optics with current application technologies, this book introduces parabolic reflectors and lenses starting from Fermat's principle. Optical image information processing technology is a current hot topic, and this book includes a chapter for students to read. This book can serve as a fundamental physics textbook for science and engineering students in comprehensive universities, as well as a teaching or self-study reference for physics teachers in other higher education institutions and high schools.
