Features: This volume is a collection of speeches by Hu Shih. Hu Shih was skilled in public speaking, and Mr. Liang Shiqiu once highly praised Hu Shih's speeches as having a "Churchill-like style." Unfortunately, the speeches of Hu Shih were largely excluded from his self-edited works such as Hu Shih's Literary Remains. The Selected Works of Hu Shih published by Wensheng Books in Taipei in 1966 and by Biographical Literature Press in Taipei in 1969 both included a volume of speeches. In 1970, the Central Academy of Sciences in Taipei edited and published Hu Shih's Speeches (in three volumes), and in 1979, the Mainland Magazine in Taipei reprinted it. The speeches collected in this volume range from the earliest published in 1918 to the latest in 1961, totaling 129 pieces, which are generally arranged in chronological order: Volume 1 covers literature and language, Volume 2 covers history, Volume 3 covers philosophy, Volume 4 covers education, Volume 5 covers life and society, Volume 6 covers science and culture, and Volume 7 covers contemporary commentary and political essays.
