Features: Maxim Gorky (1868–1936), originally named Alexei Maximovich Peshkov, is one of the finest parts of his literary legacy. My Childhood, In the World, and My University are his autobiographical trilogy. In the World is the second book in this trilogy, telling the rich and varied experiences of young Gorky after entering society and working (essentially as a child laborer). Gorky began working as an apprentice in a shoe store in his teens, later became a dish washer on a ship, served as an assistant and servant in a draftsman's family, worked as a clerk in a grocery store, and later as an assistant under a construction foreman. He also encountered some upper-class individuals and witnessed numerous social phenomena, both beautiful and ugly, cunning and foolish. Through his recollections of his youth, Gorky presents the various social phenomena of mid-19th-century Russia to his readers.
