This book is the latest work by Mr. Zhang Rulun on reviewing and critiquing the history of modern Chinese thought. The author believes that the theory of evolution, nationalism, and socialism are the basic ideological frameworks that constrain and shape the worldview of most Chinese people, and they are also the dominant ideologies of modern China. The main part of the book focuses on studying these three fundamental ideologies. Additionally, there is a significant portion dedicated to case studies of important figures in the history of modern Chinese thought, such as Cai Yuanpei, Zhang Junmai, Zhang Dongsun, Hu Shi, and others, as well as studies on important issues in the history of modern Chinese thought, such as the literary concept, historical concept, scientific concept, democratic concept, self-identity of intellectuals, the introduction and absorption of Western culture, etc. From both vertical and horizontal perspectives, it outlines several threads and inherent logical paths of the development of modern Chinese thought. By applying our current understanding of the issues, it conducts in-depth analysis and critique of the important figures and issues discussed in the history of modern Chinese thought, thereby showcasing the progress of modern Chinese thought.
