Soon after, Hollywood produced a film titled The Horse, based on the first part of the trilogy, as a major cinematic event of the century. It premiered on Christmas Day in 2000 in 1,800 theaters across the United States, taking this literary triumph to new heights. At that time, I was in Provo, Utah, and experienced the event firsthand. I was invited by Professor Shang Yuming, who was teaching at Brigham Young University in the city, to watch the film, which depicted the life of cowboys on the U.S.-Mexico border and the spirit of the west. Professor Shang Yuming was one of the translators of The Horse. At his initiative, we began to plan the translation of the subsequent two works, By the River Saco and Cities of the Plain. The success of the film greatly encouraged and motivated us, and the following year, with the support of Shanghai Translation Publishing House, we started translating the last two parts of the trilogy. Cities of the Plain is the final installment of the renowned "Border Trilogy" by American author Cormac McCarthy. The first two novels, The Horse and By the River Saco, feature the protagonists John Grady and Billy as they confront a past filled with memories and an uncertain future. The novel finds its culmination in a tragic love story, providing each character with their own sense of belonging. The grand scale and historical-like language allow readers to once again appreciate the charm of this classic literary author.
