This textbook is primarily intended for 5-year undergraduate students of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and can also be used for 7-year TCM professional teaching. It is divided into three parts:
Part 1 primarily introduces the fundamental theoretical knowledge of Wind-Heat (Wēnbìng) diseases, covering topics such as the development of Wind-Heat studies, characteristics and classification of Wind-Heat diseases, etiology and pathogenesis, differentiation theory, common diagnostic methods, treatment principles and methods, prevention, and nursing.
Part 2 focuses on the specific syndrome differentiation and treatment of various Wind-Heat diseases, including Wind-Heat, Spring-Heat, Summer-Heat, Damp-Heat, Hidden Summer-Heat, Autumn Dryness, (Bighead Pestilence), Lanhou Sha (Scarlet Fever), Warm Plague, Malaria, and Cholera.
Part 3 is a selection of classic works, introducing representative works of Wind-Heat studies from the Qing Dynasty: Ye Tianshi’s On Wind-Heat () and Xue Shengbai’s On Damp-Heat Diseases ().
The guiding philosophy behind the writing of this textbook is to meet the practical needs of current reforms in TCM higher education, fully incorporating the strengths of previous related textbooks to create a comprehensive, complete, and systematic new textbook introducing the theory and treatment methods of Wind-Heat diseases. We strive to maintain the traditional theoretical system of Wind-Heat studies while reflecting its modern academic developments, closely linking clinical practice, and facilitating students’ self-study to broaden their knowledge.
To highlight teaching priorities, theoretical concepts, academic viewpoints, and research progress in Part 1 that are not central to teaching are no longer included in the main text but are provided as "Special Readings" at the end of relevant chapters. In each chapter of Part 2, "Case Studies" are appended, along with brief "Comments."
To help students fully grasp the meanings of key terminology in the textbook, an "Explanation of Wind-Heat Terminology" is included at the end.
Regarding the dosages of the herbal formulas used in this textbook, due to variations in their sources, beginners often find it difficult to master. For clinical reference, dosages are generally converted to modern clinical standards. However, due to differences in geographical location, season, patient condition, age, constitution, and varying medication habits, these dosages should be adjusted accordingly in practice. The original dosages of each formula can be found in the "Appendix of Cited Formulas."
Additionally, to familiarize students with commonly used Chinese patent medicines for Wind-Heat emergencies, a "Selected Chinese Patent Medicines for Wind-Heat Clinical Use" is included at the end.
To adapt to the current widespread use of computer technology in teaching and better cultivate students’ self-study abilities, we have included a "Wind-Heat Teaching CD-ROM" with the textbook. The CD-ROM consists of three parts:
1. Textual materials from this textbook, which are more extensive than the book itself, especially with additional literature and case studies.
2. "Wind-Heat Terminology Dictionary," a comprehensive collection of terms related to Wind-Heat studies, serving as a reference dictionary.
3. "Wind-Heat Teaching Self-Assessment System," which not only functions as a question bank but also allows students to evaluate their learning progress.
