This textbook is intended for use by traditional Chinese medicine majors in higher education institutions of traditional Chinese medicine across the country. It is divided into two parts, with a total of 13 chapters. The first part, consisting of four chapters, focuses on the fundamentals of pediatric traditional Chinese medicine, covering topics such as the physiological and pathological characteristics of children, the care of infants and young children, and an overview of clinical practice. It enriches the discussion on the characteristics of the five zang organs in children, pediatric constitution, and an outline of syndrome differentiation. Emphasis is placed on the fundamental theoretical knowledge of pediatric traditional Chinese medicine in each section. The second part, comprising nine chapters, introduces clinical syndromes according to the five zang systems, covering lung, spleen, heart-liver, and kidney diseases. Based on the characteristics of pediatric diseases, it also includes infectious diseases (epidemic diseases), parasitic diseases, and pediatric emergencies.
As a clinical course, pediatric traditional Chinese medicine aims to better cultivate students' standardized diagnostic thinking for clinical diseases. Under each disease diagnosis, "diagnostic hints" are provided to help students improve their practical skills. Additionally, based on clinical requirements and changes in disease patterns, common conditions such as recurrent infections in children and constipation are briefly introduced. Topics like pediatric emergencies and fluid therapy are also covered to lay a foundation for enhancing students' comprehensive clinical competence.
Building on the previous editions of the Pediatrics of Traditional Chinese Medicine, this textbook incorporates recent developments in the field. In its compilation, it prioritizes clinical applicability, ensuring clear and accurate distinctions between symptoms, syndromes, and diseases. It emphasizes the consistency between etiological and pathogenic analysis and the content of syndrome differentiation and disease differentiation, striving to integrate syndrome differentiation with disease differentiation to improve the accuracy of clinical diagnosis and the specificity of treatment.
Through the study of this textbook, we hope students can understand the physiological and pathological characteristics of pediatric traditional Chinese medicine, master its fundamental clinical knowledge and skills, and apply theory to practice in clinical settings. This will enhance their clinical proficiency in pediatric traditional Chinese medicine, aligning with the needs of 21st-century traditional Chinese medicine education and talent cultivation.
