The sequencing of the human genetic genome is nearing completion, which will lead to new methods for the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of certain diseases. After the appearance of Dolly the sheep, genetically modified cloned pigs have emerged, bringing new hope for heart disease patients. Due to the progress in natural sciences, medicine has also advanced. In gastroenterology, there have been varying degrees of progress in the pathogenesis, diagnostic methods, and treatment approaches for certain diseases. Since its publication in 1986, this book has undergone two revisions and five printings, yet its content still appears outdated. Therefore, with the agreement of the publisher and the support of all contributing authors, a third edition has been decided upon to meet the needs of the new era. The third edition of this book remains divided into thirteen parts, and to save space, it follows the approach of updating while retaining the old. The pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment methods in each chapter have been revised, and the entire book has been expanded by 400,000 words. The table of contents is more prominent than before, with chapter titles added to the margins. An index is included at the end, but disease names within the chapters are not listed in it.
