Features: Inheriting traditional folk music and incorporating useful elements from Western music to broaden and develop the expressive capabilities of the sheng is a key principle followed by this collection. For this purpose, a certain number of folk tunes and pieces, as well as some foreign musical works, have been included and adapted, all while achieving training objectives. Additionally, the composition of the etudes emphasizes musicality, (interest), and scientific training methods. In compiling this collection, consideration was given to the current types and usage of the sheng, selecting three types of Hebei-style round-drum shengs—21, 24, and 26 reeds—as the primary instruments for practice. A small number of etudes and solo pieces for the 37-reed sheng have also been included. The collection is divided into four parts: Basic Exercises, Technique Exercises, Polyphonic and Counterpoint Exercises, and Musical Pieces. To accommodate the varying levels of learners, the selection of etudes covers a wide range.
