Features: The "Wu School," which emerged in the mid-Ming Dynasty in Suzhou, is one of the most important literati painting schools of the Ming period, with Shen Zhou as its founder. The era in which he was active coincided with the popularity of the "Zhe School," yet he broke away from tradition, establishing a new style. With the promotion of his student Wen Zhengming, the "Wu School" rose to prominence in the art world, replacing the "Zhe School" and taking the lead. Its influence, including its main school, branches, and derivative schools, continued until the Qing Dynasty. The renowned Ming Dynasty painting theorist and literati Wang Shideng once praised him as a contemporary master, writing in his Record of Paintings of the Wu Region During the Current Dynasty that "Mr. Shen's painting skills were unparalleled in his time, excelling in landscapes, figures, flowers, bamboos, and birds and fish, all reaching the level of divine artistry." It is certain that the mid-Ming Dynasty was a period of significant transformation in the development of Chinese painting and aesthetic consciousness, with starkly different artistic trends before and after, marked by Shen Zhou as a turning point. He stands as a monumental figure in this shift. The renowned Ming Dynasty critic Wang Shizhen once remarked on Shen Zhou's flower-and-bird paintings: "Shi Tian (Shen Zhou's alias) excels in creating them with light colors and faint ink, with even more elegant and spirited expressions, truly embodying the essence of perfection." This assessment is entirely justified. Later scholars of the Wu School, such as Wen Zhengming, Tang Yin, Lu Zhi, Chen Chun, and Zhou Zhiqian, drew inspiration from Shen Zhou in varying ways, establishing their own styles and further advancing the development of literati flower-and-bird painting. Among them, Shen Zhou played an indelible role as the originator.
