Features: The term "Orient" in "Eastern Music Culture" is derived from the original meaning of the word "Orient," which is a geographical concept referring to the regions east of the Mediterranean, particularly Asia, in contrast to the "West." Specifically, this book explores the music cultures of Asia outside China, as well as the North African Arab regions belonging to the same musical system as the Middle East. Based on the characteristics of music culture and style, we broadly divide them into four major regions: East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and West Asia-North Africa. From each region, we select one country or region's music for in-depth discussion, which are Japan, Indonesia, India, and the Arab world, while also providing introductions to other countries with notable musical characteristics. The primary focus of this book is on traditional music, with only a few chapters in some countries touching on modern professional music.
