Features: After traveling from Western Europe to Central Asia over a distance of more than 25,000 li in over two and a half years, Berthold of Liège arrived at the court of Batu Khan in Western Mongolia on the Volga River on April 4, 1246, and reached Kara-Korum on August 24, where he had the honor of attending the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Güyük. On the same year, November 13, he left Kara-Korum to return home, passing through the court of Batu Khan again on May 9, 1247, and finally returned to Lyon on November 24, 1247. He later served as a papal envoy to France. Berthold of Liège died in Dalmatia, now within the territory of Slovenia, in 1252.
