Sixteenth Century Travelogue from Southern China

Author: (English) Boxer, translated by He Gaoji
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2002-12-01
Features: This volume includes three reports by Portuguese and Spanish envoys visiting southern China between 1550 and 1575. The reports and their authors will be discussed in the introduction, while this preface only addresses some issues related to the compilation of this book. The three travel accounts of Europeans in southern China in the 16th century included in this book—Portuguese Biala's China Report, Portuguese Krus's China, and Spanish Ratd's Embassy to Fujian and Record of the Great Ming's China Affairs—have been introduced in detail by the original compiler, Boxer, and need no repetition here. It should be noted that their stay in China was not long, and they did not speak Chinese, so their accounts of China are not all accurate.
