Features: In these stories, Gu Liangcheng is the eternal protagonist. A handsome youth with pale skin. In the northern city, in the rapeseed fields, in all places where the situation is ambiguous, he engages in a wandering, powerful career. He is a mourner, a wreath maker, a beekeeper, a car mechanic, a down-and-out veterinarian, a physics teacher at a labor reformatory school. He is always himself—taller than you by half an inch, bowing his head to smile at you, touching your cheek, kissing your dry, slightly parted lips. He is the man every woman adores, the every politician hates. And yet, he is non-existent. Without a doubt, he never existed and could never exist. He is merely the dream lover that every girl pines for and pushes away from, from the heart to the uterus.
In these stories, you will see dirty, chaotic red-brick apartments, a city where dragons and phoenixes sleep, a town that can only be inhabited by strange relatives, abandoned brick factories and mountain villages. But they are all the same place—vulgar, hollow, chaotic, illogical, strange, and full of suspicion, yet warm. They are your hometown, and they will also be the place you will go after leaving your hometown.
And the love between Gu Liangcheng and the heroine is what I will keep telling you about. The two, with pale faces, doing nothing, effortlessly and unrefinedly in love. They are lovers, apart or together. Meeting, suspicion, silence, endless chatter, kissing, sex, hurt, then pretending not to have been hurt. That is my girl and my Gu Liangcheng.
About the drifters, the lost ones, the ones burdened with sorrow. About the lovers who have been forgotten. About everything of those who keep hoping, like foolish girls, stubbornly and foolishly surviving after endless disappointment.
