Features: This book is a comprehensive and detailed work on the application of modern biotechnology in the field of disease prevention and control in livestock and poultry. It not only references and incorporates the latest research findings from both domestic and international studies but also dedicates significant space to introducing the achievements and accumulated experience of the author's laboratory in this field over the years. The book focuses on discussing new biotechnological research methods in the prevention and control of infectious diseases in livestock and poultry, the development of gene engineering vaccines and recombinant biological drugs, and the research and application of molecular diagnostic techniques. The main content includes bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) technology, reverse genetics technology, and pseudovirus technology for studying the structure and function of pathogens; the development of live vector vaccines such as recombinant pseudorabies virus vaccine, recombinant fowlpox vaccine, and recombinant Marek's disease virus vaccine; as well as the research methods and functional activities of new and highly effective biological drugs such as recombinant animal interferon and gene-engineered antimicrobial peptides. This book can serve as a textbook or teaching reference for college and university faculty, graduate students, and senior undergraduate students in the field of veterinary medicine. It can also provide valuable references for researchers and technicians engaged in animal infectious diseases, biopreparations, and biotechnology research.
[Preface]
In recent years, the outbreaks of diseases such as avian influenza, foot-and-mouth disease, and mad cow disease have caused significant losses to global society and the economy, directly threatening food safety and human health. To understand the occurrence patterns and prevention methods of these animal diseases and gradually control and eliminate them, countries have invested substantial human and material resources in researching the pathogens, epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnostic methods, and the development of new vaccines and immune protection of major animal diseases, achieving remarkable progress and accumulating rich experience. Meanwhile, the biosafety of food has been brought to the forefront of the agenda. The promotion of green food, the restriction of antibiotic use, and the strengthening of drug residue detection in food have posed new challenges to traditional methods of disease prevention and control in livestock and poultry, thereby accelerating the research and development of new, highly effective, and safe biological drugs for the prevention and treatment of animal diseases. The application of high technologies, particularly modern biotechnology, has driven the development of research in the field of disease prevention and control in livestock and poultry, such as:
- The application of bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) technology in studying the structure and function of herpesviruses;
- The application of reverse genetics technology in studying the virulence genes of avian influenza viruses and the development of new vaccines;
- The application of pseudovirus technology in studying the mechanisms of viral entry into cells.
The research on recombinant pseudorabies virus vaccine, recombinant adenovirus vector vaccine, and recombinant Marek's disease virus vaccine represents a significant direction in the development of new gene engineering live vector vaccines for animals. Recombinant animal interferon and antimicrobial peptides are new biological preparations that hold promise in enhancing animal immunity, reducing antibiotic residues in livestock products, and controlling the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. Some diagnostic methods established through genetic engineering can differentiate between wild virus infection and vaccination, playing a crucial role in the eradication programs for animal diseases.
Guided by the strategic thinking of "developing high technology and achieving industrialization," we have summarized some new research methods and principles in the field of animal infectious diseases in recent years, as well as the current status, existing problems, and prospects of new recombinant vaccines and gene engineering drugs. This book is compiled based on these findings. We sincerely hope that this book can serve as a stepping stone for further research in high-tech disease prevention and control of animal infectious diseases. However, due to limitations in knowledge and ability, despite our best efforts, this book may still contain inaccuracies or errors. We respectfully invite experts and readers to provide criticism and corrections.
