Features: Another aim of this book is to combine the achievements of traditional etymology with the theories of modern semantics in the study of historical Chinese vocabulary. Traditional Chinese etymology has produced rich results in lexical research and offers insightful perspectives on lexical theory. However, these achievements are often scattered and have clear limitations. This requires us to summarize, organize, and innovate traditional etymology rather than rigidly adhere to its rules and methods. Modern semantics has made significant breakthroughs in the study of word meaning compared to traditional lexical studies. On the macro level, it treats word meaning as a system for research, and on the micro level, it conducts in-depth analysis of word meaning. Its theories and methods are highly worth. However, modern semantics primarily focuses on Indo-European languages, so the conclusions derived from it must be adapted to the realities of Chinese. The correct approach is to effectively integrate traditional etymology and modern semantics.
