[Preface] Coagulation is an important physicochemical water treatment technology and a critical separation process in industries such as water treatment, chemical engineering, and mineral processing. In water treatment processes, coagulation technology is an indispensable step, whether as the main clarification process, as a pretreatment before biological treatment, or as a deep treatment method after biological treatment. With the development of computer technology, monitoring and control methods have become increasingly rich and mature, and coagulation technology has also made significant progress, leading to wider usage. However, as of now, coagulation remains a practical technology; especially when dealing with varying water quality, many water treatment engineers lack a deep understanding of coagulants and flocculants, and are unsure how to select the appropriate chemicals. This book provides a comprehensive discussion on the production processes, usage characteristics, application conditions, market situations, and process control of different coagulants and flocculants. It is hoped that whether you are involved in water treatment engineering design, production, or research, you will find this book beneficial. This lecture note has been used as a graduate textbook in three majors—environmental science, environmental engineering, and water supply and drainage— at Tongji University for five consecutive years. In 2004, it was used as a training textbook by the China Industrial Water Treatment Committee and received praise from peers. Some members of this research team, including Zhang Bingru, Li Xia, Yu Tao, Wu Xiaolin, and Wang Xiaomin, participated in the writing of certain chapters. Based on continuous enrichment of the lecture note, through the joint efforts of the research team teachers, it has now been compiled into this book. Due to the urgency of time, there may still be many imperfections in the text. We sincerely appreciate any feedback from readers to help us correct them promptly. This book can serve as a reference for researchers and engineers engaged in water treatment, and is also suitable for undergraduate and graduate students as a textbook.
