Features: This book is written based on the requirements of the "Outline," targeting the difficulties students face in learning vocabulary for College English. It is compiled from years of teaching experience with the aim of helping students review and consolidate the vocabulary they have learned through extensive practice, improve their application skills, and ultimately pass the College English Test Band 6 (CET-6) smoothly. Currently, many students have a misunderstanding about the vocabulary section of the CET-6 exam: they believe that vocabulary questions account for only 15 points in the entire test, making them insignificant to the overall score and not worth spending much effort on. In reality, this misconception is often the reason why some students repeatedly fail the CET-6 after passing the CET-4. Some compare learning English to building a skyscraper—vocabulary is the bricks and mortar, grammar is the structure. Without these two, the skyscraper simply cannot be built. Ask yourself: which skill among listening, reading, error correction, comprehensive cloze, writing, and various new types of questions can do without vocabulary? Therefore, it can be said that mastering vocabulary is the fundamental guarantee for learning English well.
An analysis of past CET-6 papers reveals some common problems students face in the practical application of vocabulary.
1. Meaning-related issues, including polysemy, synonyms, near-synonyms, and antonyms. Many English words are polysemous. Some students only know one meaning of a word and are unaware of its other meanings or its meaning in specific contexts.
2. Collocation issues, including noun collocations, verb-noun collocations, collocations involving verbs, nouns, or adjectives with prepositions, and verb-adverb collocations. These collocations are complex and varied, making them the primary source of vocabulary errors.
This book is divided into two parts.
Part 1 consists of 95 units, focusing on familiarizing students with words and providing targeted practice. Each unit includes:
- Words to Be Remembered: Lists 10 carefully selected words for students to memorize.
- Test Yourself: Features three exercises:
1. 10 multiple-choice questions targeting the 10 central words, covering pronunciation, form, meaning, or collocation.
2. Fill-in-the-blank exercises with selected central words, requiring changes in word form.
3. 10 English-Chinese translations related to the central words.
Answers are provided at the end of each unit.
Part 2 consists of 10 comprehensive vocabulary practice units, each including:
1. 20 multiple-choice questions.
2. One error correction exercise with 15 mistakes.
3. 5 English-Chinese sentence translations.
Answers are also provided at the end of each unit.
During the writing process, we thoroughly studied recent CET-4 exam papers and conducted a detailed analysis of current popular College English textbooks, striving to make this book both a vocabulary guide for the CET-6 and a helpful tool for students' regular coursework. The language materials used in this book are authentic and cover most of the CET-4 vocabulary, incorporating some commonly used post-CET-6 words. Therefore, completing all the exercises in this book is equivalent to a thorough review of the CET-4 vocabulary, which will greatly benefit students in passing the CET-6.
