Features: At the beginning of the new century, college English teaching in China is facing a new starting point: enhancing listening and speaking skills and moving towards practical English application. This is a learning perspective rooted in social reality and respects the social function of language. The advent of the knowledge economy, the emergence of the information society, the trend of globalization, and the coexistence of diverse cultures have collectively shaped our current social reality. English, as an international language, has become an important tool for countries and individuals to effectively participate in international competition and cultural exchange. What better demonstrates the instrumental nature of language than its practical application. The continuous updating and development of college English textbooks have always been a leading task in promoting the reform of college English teaching and improving teaching quality. Currently, the Ministry of Education and the National Advisory Committee on Foreign Language Teaching in Higher Education are firmly promoting the reform of college English teaching and have formulated and issued the "Teaching Requirements for College English Courses (Trial Edition)" for the new era, providing guidance for the compilation of new college English textbooks. At the same time, this also highlights the necessity and urgency of compiling new college English textbooks. Under these circumstances, the Curriculum Development Committee of Peking University has prioritized the "College English" textbook project, and Peking University Press has specifically organized and planned the compilation and publication of this series of three-dimensional and networked "College English" textbooks. The first release of this series is the "College English Course" (including 1-6 student books and teacher books, totaling 12 books). The difficulty levels of the first four books correspond to the "General Requirements" level in the Ministry of Education's "Teaching Requirements for College English Courses (Trial Edition)," while the last two books meet the "Higher Requirements" level. Subsequently, through the study of specialized English textbooks, students can achieve the "Highest Requirements" standard stipulated in the "Requirements." At the same time, we have collaborated with the renowned Thomson Learning publishing group in the United States to adapt and publish a new series of college English listening and speaking textbooks, "Winning English—College English Practical Listening and Speaking Course" (1-4 student books and teacher books), as supplementary materials for the "College English Course," with a focus on strengthening students' practical listening and speaking skills. This book is one of the volumes in this series. The compilation of this book fully implements the overall compilation principles of "theme recycling, diverse materials, listening and speaking first, and autonomous practice." In terms of layout, it fully considers the teaching realities of different institutions and the needs of students' autonomous learning, aiming to achieve high teaching operability and flexibility. Targeting college English level three students with a medium-level English foundation, the thematic scope of the selected materials in this book emphasizes diversity, including: history, friendship, scientific biographies, cross-cultural communication, and science popularization. The selected texts are designed to alternate in difficulty, combining (interest and knowledge).
