Features: The novel's plot is intricate, rich in historical and everyday atmosphere, yet it is not without poetic charm. As people become increasingly accustomed to topics like Viagra, "flash openings" (zippered doors), and artificial hymens, this novel may seem "out of place." But perhaps, it can still evoke a longing for emotions and, against a broader and deeper backdrop of time and space, prompt some heartfelt reflections on love, marriage, and sex.
