How long does it take to be clean after medication abortion?

Patient's question:

A while ago, during another sexual encounter, I didn't take any contraceptive measures and accidentally got pregnant. I want to ask how long it takes to be clean after taking medication for an abortion?

Doctor's answer:

Pregnant women can generally undergo medication abortion around one month into their pregnancy, with the latest not exceeding 49 days. After taking the medication, it takes about two to three days for it to be completely expelled. During the expulsion, there may be vaginal bleeding, with possible symptoms such as headache, dizziness, fatigue, and abdominal pain. The decidua in the uterus will also gradually be expelled within about half a month, without breaking the skin. This is called a complete abortion.
After the abortion, it is recommended to visit the hospital for a check-up around half a month later to assess the outcome of the miscarriage. If you do not experience bleeding within a week after taking the medication, and the bleeding gradually increases around 10 days later, with bleeding lasting for about a month, you should consult a doctor and undergo a thorough examination. If the miscarriage is unsuccessful, artificial abortion or uterine scraping may be necessary.
