Can a cervical erosion get an intrauterine device?

Patient's question:

Had a gynecological examination and found cervical erosion. I am also considering getting a birth control method. Can we do them together?

Doctor's answer:

Many women may experience recurrent infections after having an intrauterine device (IUD). If it's a mild cervical erosion, the IUD can be removed. However, if the cervical erosion is severe, the IUD should not be removed because taking out the IUD involves a small surgical procedure that may worsen the cervical erosion and lead to more severe infections in other areas. If you are planning to have the IUD removed, you can go to the hospital 3-7 days after your menstrual period has ended. Currently, the IUD can be removed, but it is recommended not to have sexual intercourse within one week after removal to prevent recurrent uterine infections. It is advised to take three days of anti-inflammatory medication after the IUD is removed.
