How long will it take to know if it is an ectopic pregnancy?

Patient's question:

I'm with my husband now and using a pregnancy test. How long after conception can I confirm it's not an ectopic pregnancy?

Doctor's answer:

Ectopic pregnancy is an abnormal pregnancy where the fertilized egg implants and grows outside the uterine cavity, with tubal pregnancy being the most common type. If you usually have a period every 30 days and experience a missed period after 40 days, an ultrasound can detect it. If you don't have lower abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding, it is highly unlikely to be an ectopic pregnancy. At around two months of missed period, a detailed ultrasound examination can reveal the presence of a fetus or fetal heartbeat. An ultrasound can determine whether the gestational sac is located inside the uterus or elsewhere.
