Features: The purpose of this book is "to cultivate students' English abilities," and it follows the teaching philosophy of "task-based learning." College English for Competence is based on the concept of "task-based learning," viewing students as individuals who use language to complete tasks rather than just learners. In this series, students engage in learning by assuming specific roles. Each unit revolves around a particular topic (as specified in the Task) and trains students' language communicative skills in five aspects: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation.
1. The Task in each unit serves as the overall guide for the course, embodying the essence of the lesson. For example, in College English for Competence I, there is a unit titled: Unit 12: New Year Cocktail Party (New Year Cocktail Party). We assume that LEIBA (the student's role in the text) is asked by her boss, MR. WHITE, to host a New Year party at the beginning of the year to entertain local government officials and business partners. LEIBA's tasks include arranging the party, inviting attendees, conducting business discussions with relevant personnel at the party, and translating MR. WHITE's toasts. Under this overarching task, LEIBA proceeds step by step to complete the tasks:
2. Listening content for the New Year Cocktail Party unit: Listening to stock market updates to gather information for MR. WHITE.
3. Speaking content for the New Year Cocktail Party unit:
- Situational Dialogue 1: Discussing the possibility of establishing a joint venture with business partners at the party.
- Situational Dialogue 2: Addressing clients' questions about the company's upcoming tender at the party.
4. Reading content for the New Year Cocktail Party unit: Reading an article about the development of business in Italy.
5. Writing content for the New Year Cocktail Party unit: Drafting a toast speech for MR. WHITE.
6. Translation content for the New Year Cocktail Party unit: Translating the revised toast speech by MR. WHITE.
In line with the 2004 Ministry of Education's "Teaching Requirements for College English Courses (Trial)", this series of College English for Competence elective textbooks was co-authored by key universities nationwide to ensure a continuous four-year college English learning experience for students. College English for Competence is based on the concept of "task-based learning," emphasizing pragmatic behavior principles. Each unit trains students' language communicative skills in five aspects—listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation—centered around a specific topic. Each book is accompanied by an audio CD.
College English for Competence – Exploring International Business I covers vivid and practical business topics such as job hunting, resignation, colleague communication, phone messages, customer service, commodity transactions, handling complaints, business travel, New Year cocktail parties, news interviews, and studying abroad, with a total of 15 units. This book is suitable as a textbook for lower-level non-English majors in undergraduate university courses and can also be used for self-study.
