How are uterine fibroids caused?

Patient's question:

My company's individual manager hasn't come to work for several days. I heard that it's because she has a uterine fibroid and needs to have surgery. I am also a woman, and I don't want to get these kinds of diseases, so I want to ask what causes uterine fibroids and how to prevent them from occurring.

Doctor's answer:

It is generally believed that uterine fibroids are related to long-term estrogen levels. For example, women in their reproductive period with high estrogen levels, such as those who are fertile or pregnant, have a relatively higher incidence of uterine fibroids, and the fibroids may also shrink more easily. In contrast, women in menopause experience a decline in estrogen levels, so the fibroids generally stop growing or even shrink, making surgical treatment unnecessary. Additionally, factors such as being childless, irregular sexual activity, and being overweight also increase the risk of developing uterine fibroids. When not pregnant, the ovarian function is relatively active, leading to higher estrogen levels in the body, which increases the risk of uterine fibroids.
