What are the symptoms of vaginitis in middle-aged and elderly women?

Patient's question:

On the night of October 3rd, it suddenly appeared again with white and yellow discharge without any odor. On the 4th, it gradually increased. Regarding past treatment and effectiveness: no proper treatment was given, and it recovered quickly. Thank you.

Doctor's answer:

The treatment principles for elderly vaginitis are to enhance vaginal resistance and inhibit bacterial growth.
1. Vaginal lavage with 1% lactic acid or 0.5% acetic acid solution, followed by local medication. Metronidazole or ciprofloxacin, one tablet each time, is inserted deep into the vagina. A course of treatment lasts for 7–10 days.
2. Local or systemic estrogen therapy: Generally, the above local treatment is effective. For more severe inflammation, estrogen therapy can be supplemented. Estrogen (diethylstilbestrol) 0.125–0.25 mg is inserted into the vagina once nightly, with a course of treatment lasting 7 days. Persistent cases may take norethisterone orally, maintaining the treatment for 2–3 months. Estrogen should be discontinued for patients with breast cancer or endometrial cancer.
