The original Essentials from the Golden Cabinet was part of the Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases (16 volumes) written by Zhang Zhongjing during the Eastern Han Dynasty, specifically the section on "Miscellaneous Diseases" (also known as Golden Cabinet and Jade Box Essentials Prescriptions). It was originally in three volumes: the upper volume discussed cold damage, the middle volume addressed miscellaneous diseases, and the lower volume recorded prescriptions and treated gynecological conditions. Later, it was compiled and renamed Essentials from the Golden Cabinet with Prescriptions by Lin Yi and others during the Song Dynasty. It is one of the earliest Chinese medical texts dedicated to discussing miscellaneous diseases, with broad and systematic content. The entire book consists of 25 chapters, listing over 60 conditions and 262 prescriptions.
Live Interpretation of the Essentials from the Golden Cabinet employs various methods to provide a comprehensive and flexible interpretation of the original text using modern logical thinking. The main approaches include:
- Annotating and translating the original text into modern colloquial language, either by chapter or sub-section.
- Inserting engaging illustrations to aid in explanation.
- Categorizing the content of each volume and chapter, and presenting it as much as possible in chart form.
- Combining the pathological mechanisms, methods, prescriptions, and medications discussed in each volume and chapter to supplement interesting mnemonic diagrams, famous doctors' case studies, and rhymes. This aims to create a book that is rich in knowledge,, and references, blending theory with practice. It not only serves as an enlightening and clarifying guide for general readers but also offers significant inspiration and assistance for students and professionals in medical institutions.
