Publisher:
Publish Date: 2005-06-14
Features: Ye Shengtao (1894–1968), styled Shaojun, was a native of Suzhou, Jiangsu. Xia Ganjun (1886–1946) was from Shangyu, Zhejiang. The two authors collaborated on this book in 1934. Centered around the core themes of reading and writing, the book discusses various traditional Chinese language and literature topics, including rhetoric, grammar, vocabulary, poetry, fiction, diaries, letters, reference books, and literary history. Unlike the serious, didactic approach of most comparable textbooks, this book adopts a storytelling style, incorporating plot, characters, and dialogue, thereby offering the advantages of drama and situational teaching. Zhu Ziqing once praised it as "easier to remember than those thesis-style, outline-based works." Since its publication in the 1930s, the book has been widely welcomed by the academic community, particularly students, and has remained a bestseller. This edition is based on the 1999 November publication of the Life & Reading·Shanghai·Sanlian Bookstore.
