Features: For a century, The War of the Worlds has been adapted and performed in various forms. In 1938, it was adapted into a local story and broadcast on American radio. Due to the realistic depiction of the novel, listeners believed a Martian invasion was real, causing widespread panic. This incident became a bizarre joke in American history. In 2005, the renowned Hollywood director Steven Spielberg fulfilled his childhood dream by bringing The War of the Worlds to the screen, turning it into a sci-fi epic with the same name, starring the famous actor Tom Cruise and serving as the producer. The film cost $250 million, making it the highest-budgeted film globally to date. The creation of The War of the Worlds film is somewhat related to the "9/11" terrorist attacks. Is this a peaceful and tranquil world? The world we inhabit actually faces various uncertainties, and this unpredictability makes people's nerves so fragile. In the face of dangerous challenges, only by uniting can we bravely overcome difficulties. — Steven Spielberg
I remember I used to think, if I had the chance to direct The War of the Worlds, I wouldn’t make it a sci-fi film but rather one that explores human psychology or reflects social phenomena, depicting how a civilization on the brink of disaster could save the lives of all humanity. Wells was very visionary; he foresaw the emergence of tanks, aerial bombing, chemical warfare, laser weapons, and industrial robots. He was also a humanitarian. In 1897, a quarter of the world was under the rule of the British Empire, but their genocide against the indigenous Tasmanian people in southern Australia moved him to pen his anger and warn the British Empire: no nation could entirely avoid the crisis of conquest. I made this film not out of anger, nor to criticize any government. I only know that Wells hated colonialism, and the story he wrote depicts the end of the world. Due to the natural cooling of celestial bodies, Mars became cold and no longer habitable. The Martians turned their attention to the nearby Earth. "I" and my wife lived a peaceful life in the suburbs of London, but one day, a metal cylinder fell from the sky, shattering the tranquility. Martians crawled out of the cylinder and immediately began shooting humans. These invaders were highly intelligent, equipped with advanced weapons, and utterly ruthless. They possessed robots of various uses, capable of emitting heat rays and releasing toxic black smoke. Compared to the humans' weapons, ours were truly insignificant. The Martians gradually landed on Earth, leaving devastation in their wake. Humans fled in panic, and London became a ghost town. "I" hid in a house, only to have a metal cylinder crash down on it, burying me in the ruins. I lived in the basement for half a month, coincidentally becoming the closest observer of the Martians. Humanity mobilized artillery, cavalry, and fleets to fight the Martians to the death, but the war was brutal, and victory seemed impossible. However, just as humanity was gradually losing hope, the Martians mysteriously died.
