Features: The history of ancient Chinese coins. In the long history of ancient society, it has developed an independent path, creating a highly distinctive coin culture. As the medium of exchange for commodity trade, ancient coins played a significant role in developing the economy and commodity exchange, directly reflecting the social and economic development and changes of different historical periods and embodying the will of the state. They greatly promoted economic exchanges between regions in China, fostering the advancement of the economy, trade, and culture. They also influenced neighboring countries, strengthening economic and cultural exchanges with them.
Although ancient Chinese coins are small in form, their scope is very broad. In addition to the mainstream bronze coins, coins made of iron, lead, tin, gold, silver, and paper were also cast, enriching the means of coin circulation. In terms of coin-making technology, it evolved from manual production to machine production, reflecting the extraordinary ingenuity of the working people. The script on the coins included Seal, Clerical, Regular, Running, and Cursive calligraphy, reaching its peak in the Song Dynasty. Even emperors personally inscribed coin inscriptions, taking the integration of coins and calligraphy art to an extreme level. At the same time, from the Han Dynasty to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, coins reflecting folk customs and sentiments also appeared. This practice of incorporating superstition and prayers for good fortune into coins was another great innovation in ancient Chinese coin culture, greatly enriching it.
Moreover, China not only has a long history of coin casting but also a very distant history of studying coins. Since the Southern Dynasties of the Liang Dynasty, countless scholars have pursued this field diligently, recording and publishing books without interruption, pushing the study of ancient Chinese coins in broader directions.
