Features: This is a practical reference book for the appreciation and collection of modern Chinese painting and calligraphy. It is also a series of academic studies compiling the works of modern masters. It serves as a small encyclopedia introducing modern masters, and for each reader, it is a comprehensive book for understanding the art of modern masters. According to Xie Ziliu's traditional perspective, the tradition of Chinese painting should be, and can be, promoted as a universal principle. It is the tradition of Tang and Song Dynasty painters, where "painting is passed through painting" and "people are passed through painting," known as the "advanced exemplars of tradition." On the other hand, the tradition of Ming and Qing Dynasty literati painting, especially the tradition of the wild and unrestrained school, should be regarded as a special lineage, from which one should spiritually draw both its essence and form. However, based on long-term practical experience, Xie Ziliu, while agreeing with the creativity of the wild and unrestrained school of literati painting, Chinese painting, as a form of painting, should be realistic. This requires painters to take life as the sole source of their creativity, "learning from nature and expressing the heart's source." It also requires painters to possess solid foundational skills in shaping images, including the harmony of form and spirit, the fusion of subject and object, and the exquisite and vivid brushwork that complements the shaping of images. Xie Ziliu's painting emphasizes the "method of painting" itself, with images that are both form and spirit, and the fusion of subject and object, rooted in life yet transcending it. His brushwork is precise, lively, and meticulous, capturing the essence of life, complementing the portrayal of images while possessing its own aesthetic appeal. In terms of the "person" beyond the "painting," his achievements in calligraphy, poetry, appraisal, and the study of painting history are all outstanding. Especially his contributions to appraisal can be said to surpass those of all generations. His contributions to the study of painting history have revealed the true lineage of the "advanced exemplars of tradition," restoring order, being a steadfast pillar, and rescuing the ship from the storm.
