The heart is a lonely hunter

Features: The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter was once ranked as one of the top 100 best LGBTQ+ novels, ranking 17th on the list. According to translator Chen Xiaoli, it is McCullers' first full-length novel and the work that brought her fame. It was published in 1940 when she was 23 years old. The setting of the story is similar to the hot Southern town in The Ballad of the Sad Café. She said, 'The homosexual love between the two deaf-mute men in the novel is moving, and the homosexuality is subtle, sometimes intense, sometimes silent. The theme highlights McCullers' signature themes: loneliness is absolute, and even the deepest love cannot change humanity's ultimate loneliness. Desperate loneliness is less a sin and more the root of sin.'" A Nanjing reader named lostpast recently finished reading The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter and believes it explores the theme of "loneliness" more deeply than The Ballad of the Sad Café. She said, "What left a deep impression on me is a poor girl in the book who hides in a wealthy family's garden, eavesdropping on Mozart played on an old radio, climbing onto the roof in the dark, and reflecting on Mozart in silence. The little girl will gradually grow up, becoming calm, then indifferent, and finally numb, but readers who listen to their inner voices in the dark can find an unbearable loneliness in her. Everyone is lonely, yet they are not connected by this shared loneliness. People are ultimately alone, as if they are destined to die. This is a cold truth, a harsh reality, but McCullers depicts it vividly and sharply, making it tolerable and necessary to tolerate." The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter may seem absurd, but in McCullers' hands, those characters seem to come alive, with meticulous logic and their own destinies. The writer, the reader, and the critic cannot control them." Some translators seem to be searching for academic justification for McCullers.
