Saving History from the Nation-State: Nationalist Discourse and the Study of Modern Chinese History

Features: This book focuses on China in the early 20th century, and I will explore the close relationship between the nation-state, nationalism, and linear history. The book is divided into two parts. The first part consists of two chapters, discussing the theoretical issues of the nation as the subject of enlightenment history. The second part includes five case studies that rely on textual analysis, which are the results of my attempts to write a multi-threaded history. The purpose is to shed a little light in the shadow of the framework of national evolutionary history. The book has a broad perspective without losing depth. It can examine modern Chinese history from a global perspective and also delve into key points,,, integrating factors such as the world and China, history and reality, intellectual culture, political practice, and political systems. It is one of the more representative academic works since the "linguistic turn" in international academia in the 1970s-1980s and the "discovering history in China" trend in American Sinology.
