What are the advantages and disadvantages of transvaginal ultrasound for detecting gynecological diseases?

Patient's question:

I am from the countryside. A few weeks ago, I was thoroughly examined at the nearest hospital and diagnosed with uterine fibroids. However, the hospital at that time advised me to go to a larger hospital in our local area for treatment. After I arrived at the city hospital, the outpatient doctor conducted a thorough examination. The doctor told me I needed to have a transvaginal ultrasound. I didn’t understand it, and hearing about the examination method made me even more nervous. But the doctor explained that this method is quite accurate, so I had to decide to go with it.

Doctor's answer:

Vaginal ultrasound often possesses the characteristics of high frequency and high resolution in gynecological diseases, and therefore, its examination results are usually clearer and more accurate compared to those of abdominal MRI. However, it should be noted that due to the high frequency of this examination method, the detection depth during the process is often increased. This is particularly true for far-field tissues and inflammatory manifestations, which may not be effectively detected. Additionally, for some individuals who have undergone surgery, leading to adhesions in the uterus, or those with a longer cervix, the uterine position may be higher. When the uterus is affected by large uterine fibroids that exceed the detection range of MRI, it may also be difficult to obtain a clear image.
