Bleeding - Is it a miscarriage?

Patient's question:

I just bought a pregnancy test kit a couple of days ago, and it showed that I'm three weeks pregnant. But suddenly yesterday, I had a little bleeding, just a tiny amount, and I didn't feel much physically. Today, there's a bit more blood, and I also have some abdominal pain. I want to ask how to have a miscarriage if the bleeding occurs.

Doctor's answer:

Because you are currently only three weeks pregnant, at this stage, it is normal for the gestational sac not to reappear. If there is bleeding at this time, there are two possibilities. One possibility is that it may have formed a fertilized egg, but the implantation was successful, and the bleeding now is a normal menstrual bleeding. This condition is called a biochemical pregnancy. The other possibility is that the gestational sac reappears, indicating threatened miscarriage.
