Features: The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is the acronym for the Commonwealth of Independent States. It is a product of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Of the fifteen former Soviet republics, twelve (excluding the Baltic states) joined the CIS. These twelve countries lived within a unified economic and political space for several decades, and they have inseparable ties, which is the reason for their "union." At the same time, these twelve countries also strive to protect and expand their own interests, which is the reason for their "independence." The CIS exists in the contradiction between "independence" and "union."
