Features: Thomas Eakins (1844–1916). An American painter. Born on July 25, 1844, in Philadelphia, and died on June 25, 1916, in the same city. He majored in plaster casts at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and studied anatomy at the Philadelphia Medical College. His works emphasize perspective and anatomy. His masterpiece, Dr. Gross’s Clinic (held by Jefferson Medical College), is celebrated for its astonishingly realistic style, making him a key figure in American naturalistic painting. His portraits are also highly regarded, having won him several awards and honors. From 1876 to 1886, he taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts but was dismissed for insisting on using female nudes in his teaching. He also faced opposition when teaching anatomy at other institutions, leading him to abandon teaching in the 1890s.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, American naturalist painter Thomas Eakins combined light and shadow to capture the soul hidden deep within, as if "reading people." He depicted emotionally intense yet ordinary scenes, reflecting the essence of American life. His vivid works serve as the best portrayal of American-style life at the time. In his portraits, the exterior and the interior, reality and beauty coexist. Eakins was the first in the U.S. to introduce live nude models in his teaching, earning him the title of a master of realistic portraiture.
