The author was the first German writer to begin researching the role of Germany in World War II. Stalingrad is a fictionalized account of the destruction of Hitler's German Sixth Army during the Battle of Stalingrad. The Sixth Army was encircled by the Soviet army between the Don and Volga rivers starting on November 19, 1942. The novel is narrated from the perspectives of participants, particularly Colonel Wintershofen, Sergeant Gnothke of the penal camp, Army Doctor Simmel, and Generals Gennah, Damm, and Finkner, among others, detailing the entire army's encirclement and the horrifying journey until their surrender in February 1943.
Ordered not to surrender and not to retreat, they were forced to endure extreme cold, hunger, and injuries on the vast Russian snowlands under the harsh conditions of insufficient ammunition and food. They were compelled to follow Hitler's "fight to the last man, the last bullet" order. However, the battlefield was in chaos, with corpses scattered everywhere, no external aid, the Führer issued irresponsible orders, the media continued to spread false propaganda of heroic deaths, soldiers died every day, thousands of wounded were crammed into underground shelters, mad soldiers fought over the occasional supplies dropped by air, epidemics spread, and officers resorted to suicide to escape the.
In this situation, Wintershofen finally realized that they had been used in a meaningless and criminal war. Their Führer was the one who had dragged the German nation into the abyss of disaster. When he was finally captured, Wintershofen and Gnothke discussed their hopes for the rebirth of a new Germany.
Many parts of the novel are based on real events, interspersed with numerous firsthand accounts from prisoners, letters, diaries, and other materials, making it a work of historical value.
