Features: As a textbook for the practical training course of chemical engineering unit process engineering, this book integrates the "Chemical Engineering Principle Course Design" and "Chemical Machinery Basic Course Design" commonly established in universities from a systematic perspective. It serves as a comprehensive and fundamental engineering training course, enabling students to gain a relatively complete understanding of the concepts, methods, and design skills related to chemical engineering unit processes and equipment through this course. Through such training, students can combine the process design of unit operations in chemical engineering design with the design of chemical process equipment, further establishing an engineering perspective in chemical process design and enhancing their ability to solve practical engineering problems using their acquired fundamental knowledge.
In terms of content selection, this textbook is based on cultivating students' fundamental engineering design abilities, with particular emphasis on strengthening the application of theoretical knowledge, fostering an engineering perspective, and developing basic design skills. In addition to providing a necessary introduction to the preparation of engineering documents for chemical processes, the book primarily focuses on the process design of four typical chemical engineering unit processes: "Distillation Process Design," "Absorption Process Design," "Extraction Process Design," and "Drying Process Design." Furthermore, considering the widespread application of shell-and-tube heat exchangers in chemical engineering, this book also provides a detailed introduction to the design of shell-and-tube heat exchangers.
In these chapters, the book emphasizes the comprehensive nature of solution design in unit process process design, rather than focusing solely on the process calculations of individual equipment. It strives to guide students to analyze comprehensively the impact of various factors involved in the design work on the entire system process from a systems engineering perspective, highlighting the integration and coordination of the system. This is highly beneficial and necessary for cultivating students' engineering perspective, improving their ability to analyze and solve practical engineering problems, and enhancing their overall competence.
From the perspective of unit process equipment design, considering the length of the book and the basic teaching requirements for process engineering students, the book selects two highly typical topics—"Mechanical Design of Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchangers" and "Mechanical Design of Tower Equipment"—as the core content for this course. This enables process engineering students to gain a relatively comprehensive understanding of the mechanical and structural design of chemical engineering equipment, master the fundamental content and related knowledge of mechanical and structural design, broaden their knowledge base, bridge the gap between process design and equipment design, improve the coordination between process engineering students and chemical engineering design technicians, and further enhance their practical design capabilities.
The design examples selected in the textbook are primarily derived from actual engineering renovation projects undertaken by the author's teaching and research department in recent years, providing a realistic engineering application background. In the treatment of these design examples, the book strives to demonstrate a close integration of theory and practice, aiming to enable students to learn methods for applying their fundamental and engineering technical knowledge to process and solve practical engineering problems, thereby improving their ability to address real-world challenges.
In terms of textbook writing, the book is designed to facilitate self-study, allowing students to complete course design tasks under the guidance of instructors. This book is primarily intended for use as a course design textbook in undergraduate programs in "Chemical Engineering and Technology" and "Applied Chemistry." It is also suitable as a course design textbook or reference book for "Environmental Engineering," "Biological Engineering," and other disciplines that involve "Chemical Engineering Unit Processes and Equipment." Additionally, it can serve as a design reference book for engineering technicians working in the fields of chemical engineering and related industries.
