Later, Miss Taylor married Mr. Weston and left Emma's home. Emma became friends with Harriet, a homeless girl from the local boarding school, and regarded herself as Harriet's protector, determined to find her a suitable husband. The young farmer Robert Martin was deeply in love with Harriet, but Harriet, influenced by Emma's class and status prejudices, rejected him. Emma was determined to arrange the marriage between Harriet and the clergyman Mr. Elton, but eventually she discovered that Mr. Elton was in love with her. Disappointed, Mr. Elton had no choice but to marry someone else.
