Does it hurt to have your first period after surgery?

Patient's question:

Hello doctor, I had been feeling a bit of morning sickness for a while, then realized I was pregnant. Recently, I just had an abortion surgery, and it was truly agonizing. I heard that the first period after the surgery is also particularly painful. Is it painful for the first period after an abortion?

Doctor's answer:

The first menstrual period after surgery will basically not cause excessive pain, and there is no significant difference compared to normal conditions. In other words, if you previously experienced menstrual cramps, they may still occur again. If the pain is particularly severe or uncomfortable, there are things to consider, such as inflammation of the uterine appendages or local adhesions that may have been caused. Further follow-up with B-ultrasound imaging is needed to make a diagnosis.
