Harriet Beecher Stowe, the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, was deeply appalled by the American slave system, which treated black slaves as soulless beasts, subjecting them to brutal abuse and trade. In 1850, the U.S. Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act, stipulating that no one could harbor escaped slaves, and that residents of free states who aided them would face legal consequences. The passage of this law effectively recognized black slaves as private property of slave owners throughout the United States in legal form. At the time, a significant number of northern political and religious leaders even defended the act, arguing that it was necessary to maintain the unity of the Union and prevent the nation from splitting into two separate countries. This further enraged Stowe. She believed that only those who were unaware of the truth and cruelty of slavery would defend the institution and the Fugitive Slave Act. Determined to expose the horrifying evils of slavery to the world through literature, she resolved to write a work that would appeal primarily to Northern white Christians, hoping that her writing would inspire them to sympathize with and support the struggle to abolish slavery.
