The book comprehensively summarizes professional notes, completely compiles historical and cultural knowledge, authoritatively analyzes questions from renowned institutions, and for the first time deciphers the entire process of media postgraduate entrance exams, providing in-depth interpretations of national media institutions. The development of the media industry and the prosperity of academia have attracted many young people with aspirations in journalism and communication to engage in research and practical work. In recent years, the number of candidates applying for postgraduate studies in journalism and communication has increased year by year, with a rapid growth trend. These students hope to further study and research the fundamental theories of journalism and communication, solve numerous problems in media practice, enhance their practical value, and lay a solid foundation for future media work. However, for a long time, candidates, especially those switching majors, have struggled with limited access to information, seeking experience tips at high costs, obtaining professional notes through long efforts, and gathering exam information. Some gave up halfway due to difficulties, while others failed due to inaccurate information. Many candidates yearned for an authoritative and practical guide to journalism and communication that could cover notes, questions, analyses, experiences, methods, and information related to postgraduate entrance exams, providing them with guidance for their studies.
As a media professional website with significant influence and appeal in China, we have always wanted to do something for these eager learners. By integrating and utilizing the resources and advantages of existing online platforms, we have gathered the wisdom of experts and scholars in the field of journalism and communication to publish a reference book specifically for postgraduate entrance exam preparation in journalism and communication. This book should be scientific, consolidating the theoretical essence of various branches of journalism and communication; practical, helping candidates improve quickly through thematic reviews, question analysis, and resource information; and guiding, providing experience, methods, and exam-taking skills for postgraduate entrance exam preparation in journalism and communication.
Following this approach, we began organizing and planning the writing of A Comprehensive Guide to Postgraduate Entrance Exam Preparation in Journalism and Communication in the spring of 2004. The writing process took over a year and was supported by experts, professors, and young scholars from renowned institutions such as Renmin University of China, Communication University of China, Fudan University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, and Wuhan University. We believe that this book will, as we hope, provide candidates with scientific and effective guidance and assistance, helping them achieve success in their postgraduate entrance exams.
The book is divided into five parts to help candidates effectively use it for review and preparation.
Part 1: Core Professional Notes
During the, many candidates aspire to quickly improve and break through in the fundamental theories of their majors. Through surveys, we found that successful postgraduate students are skilled at summarizing and organizing professional notes, refining reference materials to achieve better results. Professional knowledge notes are one of the "secrets" to success. This part comprehensively summarizes the fundamental theories of the journalism and communication major, dividing them into seven core thematic notes: Journalism Theory, History of Chinese Journalism, History of Foreign Journalism, Journalism Practice, Theories and History of Communication, Advertising, and Radio and Television Studies. We reference the annual questions and exam focuses of journalism and communication programs from various universities, combining teaching materials and graduate study notes, and organize them based on authoritative textbooks to meet the practical needs of candidates. For each note, we break away from existing textbook models and institutional boundaries, reorganizing and rewriting the most core and fundamental theories, with a focus on clarity and organization. This not only helps candidates grasp the macro knowledge system of journalism and communication but also guides them in reviewing scientifically and effectively. At the end of each note, we provide recommended readings and links for further expansion, which we believe will greatly benefit professional review.
Part 2: Historical and Cultural Knowledge Compilation
Many universities include cultural comprehensive exams covering literature, history, and other aspects in their postgraduate entrance or. This aligns with the needs of journalism and communication research and helps improve the comprehensive cultural quality of media professionals. However, due to the vast and extensive nature of historical and cultural knowledge, many candidates struggle with low efficiency and poor results in their review, often feeling overwhelmed. This part selects key knowledge from Chinese and foreign literature and history, classifying and explaining them by subject. The content covers Chinese culture, Chinese history, world history, Chinese literature, and foreign literature, capturing the core knowledge of historical and cultural studies. It not only improves candidates' learning efficiency but also serves as a quick reference manual for their historical and cultural knowledge, truly solving their worries and frustrations during review. Similarly, recommended readings and links at the end of each subject can help candidates quickly access broader relevant materials and information, broadening their horizons and expanding their knowledge during the review process.
Part 3: Analysis of Past Exam Questions
Finding exam focuses, grasping question-setting patterns, and guiding review direction through past professional questions are key to postgraduate entrance exam preparation and another "secret" to success. This part includes past questions from seven renowned universities—Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Communication University of China, Fudan University, Nanjing University, and Wuhan University—related to journalism and communication from 2001 to 2004, with detailed analyses and solutions. For objective questions, reference answers are provided, highlighting key, difficult, and attention points. For subjective questions, answer strategies and key points are given. Analyzing past questions is the first step in review, as understanding the scope and focus of the exam allows for targeted, focused, and efficient preparation. Therefore, we recommend that candidates first familiarize themselves with and analyze the questions from the universities they are applying to before proceeding with systematic review. It is worth noting that each university has its own question-setting style and scope, but the key content of journalism and communication remains consistent. During review, candidates can analyze and practice past questions from various universities to grasp key points, solve difficulties, familiarize themselves with hot topics, deepen their understanding of professional knowledge, master answer strategies and techniques, and evaluate their review progress, preparing them fully for the exam. It should be noted that the answers provided in this book are for reference purposes only, serving as a starting point for further exploration. Candidates should use them flexibly during review and avoid rote memorization.
Part 4: Deciphering the Entire Postgraduate Entrance Exam Process
Seven graduate students from popular programs in renowned journalism and communication institutions share their experiences with the exam, including hardships, insights, unique experiences, preparation methods, professional review advice, and summaries of key issues. Readers will join the authors in sharing the entire review process, experiencing the struggles and challenges, and feeling the joy of success. It must be emphasized that these experiences, methods, and advice are only for reference and guidance. Candidates should explore their own effective methods based on their individual circumstances. Additionally, at the end of each article, the authors provide information on the books, newspapers, materials, and websites they used during review, for easy reference.
Part 5: Media Postgraduate Entrance Exam Checklist
Knowing oneself and the enemy is the key to victory. Many candidates fail to fully obtain information about the universities they are applying to, such as program settings, enrollment numbers, supervisors, and score lines, leading to withdrawal or failure. To address these challenges, we conducted extensive research and interviews. This part provides a comprehensive introduction to 43 postgraduate programs in journalism and communication across the country, including program settings, enrollment information, initial exam subjects, procedures, reference books, score lines, and contact methods, offering candidates a full range of references and comparisons during their preparation.
The postgraduate entrance exam only means we have just begun. If it is the stepping stone for realizing our life goals, we hope this book helps you leap higher and further. If it is the ship leading us to success, we hope it becomes your guide through the storms. "It is easy to discuss matters, but difficult to act; it is easy to act, but difficult to succeed." Whether successful or not, when looking back at this brief yet unforgettable experience in life, we hope to see your smile and remind ourselves that the road of life is still long.
